Film based intergenerational policy dialogues between children and policy makers against sexual abuse and exploitation

OUT OF THE SHADOWS (OOS) ADVOCACY GRANTS

Brief description
The aim of the project was to contribute in addressing the child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) challenges in Madhes Province, central southern region of Nepal. The ultimate purpose was to contribute in reduction of prevailing CSAE cases in Nepal using films in local and provincial intergenerational advocacy dialogues between young people and policy makers. The project provided solid information to the local and provincial policy makers for strengthening the implementation of existing laws and policies, areas for reforming the policies and formulating the new policies.

The project engaged the following major participants:

Children: 160 (80 boys and 80 girls) from the diverse background such as marginalized,
school going, school dropped out, rural, urban, and early married were engaged.

Local policy makers and stakeholders: 160 participants including policy makers of local governments, police officers (security personnels), journalists, teachers, child rights activists, lawyers, and civil society advocates/leaders.

Province level policy makers and stakeholders: 84 including policy makers of local governments, police officers (security personnels), journalists, teachers, child rights activists, lawyers, and civil society advocates/leaders.

Methods:
Creative forms of arts based systematic methodologies were used to conduct eight intergenerational advocacy dialogues. The eight films produced through the district level advocacy dialogues were shown at the province level dialogue, and policy feedback and recommendations were generated.

Further information:
The project generated many commitments from the local policy makers and stakeholders, which otherwise would not have been generated.
