Pathways to Gender-responsive Justice: Strengthening capacities of duty bearers and right holders
Funded by UN Women, this transformative project (July 2024–June 2026) aims to establish
gender-responsive justice systems in Nepal, focusing on six districts of Madhes Province:
Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusha, Rautahat, Bara, and Parsa. Implemented in partnership with the Legal
Aid and Consultation Centre, it covers 12 municipalities, including Janakpur and Birganj.
The initiative empowers duty bearers and right holders to ensure justice for women victims of
gender-based violence (GBV). Core objectives include: building the capacity of Judicial
Committees, training informal justice actors, supporting women’s groups, and advocating for
legal policies to combat GBV.
Key activities involve seminars to raise awareness, tailored training for mediators, legal support
for GBV victims, and assistance in policy formulation. The Team Leader is Bhagyashree Rawal
from Legal Advisor and Consultancy Center, Manbhavan, Lalitpur. The project is led by Sanjay
Prasad Paudel from Janaki Women Awareness Society in Madhesh Province, with legal experts
Uma Yadav and Julee Karn, supported by Rs. 3,538901 in funding.
Expected outcomes include empowered municipal officials, strengthened informal justice
mechanisms, active women’s organizations, improved access to justice, and the implementation
of gender-sensitive policies. This initiative envisions a sustainable framework to address GBV,
fostering a just and inclusive society through collaboration and strategic action.
